The Game We Love to Hate

Golf is a crazy game. It’s also the greatest game. And a super frustrating game. If you have played golf more than once or twice you know the feeling. We go from “I hate this game” to “I love this game” and back again and we’re only on hole 4!

It’s hard to beat the feeling of having hit a perfect sweet spot drive 270 yards down the center of the fairway. Unfortunately, this is typically followed by the antithesis of that feeling when the second shot shanks off into a water hazard. And there you have it. Within the space of one hole…from “this is the greatest game ever” to “I hate this game”. It becomes an emotional rollercoaster ride of sorts which is what makes it so much of a head game.

You can work on your swing, and your grip, and your stance, and your tempo all you want…your still going to hit the occasional shank. The pros that play the PGA tour are no exception. They miss fairways, they shank shots, they lose balls in water hazards, and they miss three foot putts! They just don’t do it as often as you and I do. More importantly, they tend to recover from a bad shot more quickly.

So don’t beat yourself up for that shank shot into the hazard. Even the pros do that occasionally. Just refocus and make the next shot the best one you got. And keep loving the game – even when it seems like the game hates you.
